Talk:Cavalier Wireless with Network Manager
From UVA Linux Users Group
This works a treat! My card (wireless pre-n) won't connect to Cavalier under Windows, but does with this tutorial.
There's no way to make it work through Network Manager, is there?
I haven't managed to get it to work with Network Manager yet. I remember seeing a bug report a few weeks ago that indicated that Network Manager itself is capable of handling it, but the KDE frontend (I don't use Gnome, so I don't know if it's the same situation there) doesn't have the right options. - Mark
I may have spoke a little too soon. I can connect with this, but I can't maintain a connection. I tried the script as well, and that never links up. Back to wahoo... --J 19:01, 26 November 2007 (EST)

[edit] NetworkManager now working?
Will has reported success[1]; has anyone else tried lately? — erik arvidson 09:56, 17 January 2008 (EST)
- I tried again today, no luck. I even tried running NetworkManager 0.7, a prerelease. Trip 18:43, 26 January 2008 (EST)
[edit] Added Instructions
I got this working today as well, and added some instructions to the wiki. I hope it works for people -- it worked for me. I did have trouble keeping the connection, but cavalier is always dodgy in my building, and it drops wahoo as well. --J 16:54, 20 January 2008 (EST)
- Would you happen to have an Intel PRO/Wireless 3945ABG (or similar) card? If so, the problem may be that the open source driver SUCKS; I had the same problems before I installed the proprietary driver from Intel's web site. Connectivity was great from then on. Fedora and similar distributions come with the open source driver; Ubuntu includes the proprietary driver as a "restricted driver", which is great. — erik arvidson 19:14, 20 January 2008 (EST)
- Nope, I'm on some old hardware, and have a Netgear pcmcia card (802.11g) and a Belkin pre-N pcmcia card. The Netgear card always worked with linux, the pre-N, not until about last year (needs ndiswrapper). But I don't think it was the drivers in my case -- everyone loses connection where we're at, whether on linux, windows or mac. We're just in a dead zone in Bryan Hall.--J 00:35, 22 January 2008 (EST)
- EDIT: Erik, I ended up having to get a new laptop recently, and it has the same Intel chip that you have. I have the same problem with intermittent drops when I'm on cavalier, which leads me to try not to use cavalier. It's irritating having to go grab those .cert files every ten minutes. There's probably a way to script something so it automatically reconnects, but I'm just not there yet.
[edit] NetworkManager 0.7.0
There's a new version of NetworkManager out, and it changes the way we have to connect. I've not gotten it to work yet, but this may be something to do with cavalier -- none of my students could get online this morning either. When I have it figured out, I'll post new screenshots in an added section. --J 12:45, 28 October 2008 (EDT)
[edit] Instructions Updated for NM 0.7
I've updated everything to reflect the changes in NetworkManager 0.7. I've tested it out a few times, and it's always worked -- I never have any problems connecting directly from NetworkManager. If someone does have trouble, please post your questions here or on the mailing list.
[edit] Network Manager 0.8~rc2 works
The newest version of Network Manager connects to cavalier just fine, and is easier to use than ever. No more need to hack your .p12 file with openssl; you just need your personal digital certificate and the UVA stand-alone usher certificate. I've updated the guide to reflect this. --J 01:44, 20 April 2010 (UTC)
